Though it has no photos or graphics; for those with Irish ancestry in Philadelphia; it can nonetheless paint a good picture of immigrant life back then. It even briefly mentioned and described a neighborhood that was among the first my family lived in. It is a scholarly work published by Temple University in 1973; footnoted; and well sourced.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. irish in PhilaBy Irishgranloved this book;great reference material also had 3 pages relating to my own family ancestors. How could I not be pleased.one daughter reading it now.it will become a legacy for my children.14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. informative and keeps you readingBy A CustomerThere is much to be written about the Irish in Philadelphia and this book certainly goes into great detail about the emigrants. It tells the conditions of the city; famillies and how they lived; worked; died. I have read it several times and will read it again and again.A family member in Northern Ireland picked up my book and read bits of it while visiting. I was asked to get a copy for them to take back to Ireland as they wanted to know more about the emigrants and their lives after they left the old country.
