I have frequently recommended it to colleagues from completely unrelated disciplinesBy Steven M. GorelickI was moved to write this glowing review for reasons only somewhat related to the substance of the topic covered. It is a masterful; summing up of an almost impossibly vast topic; and I treasure it for that substantive accomplishment; but the reason it comes to mind so frequently has to do with its length.I need to be clear: when it comes to a subject that I study; research and teach; brevity is almost meaningless. If a 1000 page piece of revelatory scholarship breaks new ground and is meticulously and elegantly written and researched; I'm ready. I have read 1500 page books in my field that are too short; and 200 page books that are too long. Believe me; I don't fetishize the number of pages of a piece of scholarship. But after a number of years of profitably using the most recent edition of Engel's introductory book; I'm absolutely convinced that what he has accomplished in this compact package of facts; chronologies; and original insights is nothing short of miraculous. He shows; with absolute clarity; that even the most complex and contested topic -- packed with conflicting theories and scholarly controversies -- can all be brought together in a marvelous; short work of clarity and sense-making that can fully serve as an indispensable touchstone for anyone beginning study of the topic. In fact; I have frequently recommended it to colleagues from completely unrelated disciplines:"You think your topic is so vast and complex that it can't be distilled into a truly comprehensive; brilliant; and original summing up? Well; you may not be able to do it. Very few people can. No shame in that""But if you want to see it done close to perfection; whatever you do; read David Engel on the Holocaust!"
