The History of American Ranks and Rank Insignia (Second Edition)

ePub The History of American Ranks and Rank Insignia (Second Edition) by Steven A. Bingaman in History

Description

The purpose of this work is to provide researchers; students; and space enthusiasts with a comprehensive reference for facts about Project Apollo; America's effort to put humans in the Moon. Research for this work started in 1988; when the author discovered that; despite the number of excellent books that focused on the drama of events that highlighted Apollo; there were none that focused on the drama of the numbers. This book is separated into two parts. The first part contains narratives for the Apollo 1 fire and the 11 flown Apollo missions. Included after each narrative is a series of data tables; followed by a comprehensive timeline of events from just before liftoff to just after crew and spacecraft recovery. The second part contains more than 50 tables. These tables organize much of the data from the narratives in one place so they can be compared among all missions. The tables offer additional data as well.

In a hobby devoid of much real scholarly research; Bingaman has done his homework. There is a dizzying amount if raw information available to the reader. Of course; the author comments his primary source is the internet with all of its questionable information. Now for the three stars rating. The information remains hidden and locked away in the 464 pages and is very difficult to find. There is no index. the Table of Contents is skeletal and not of much help. It is not even accurate as there are only 464 pages in the book; yet the listings supposedly continue up through page 516. One would have expected some illustrations and charts to show ranks for the services through the years; but not one is included. The end notes are extensive and informative; but a bibliography would have been more useful to the reader. Such is the whole book: you can't get there from here. For sheer text volume it is hard to surpass; but it certainly is not for a beginning collector or a casual browser.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed.By Richard LabanSadly; this huge book has not one photo or drawing of any of the insignia. And it needs a lot of proofreading.
