In 1939 the Polish town of Konin vanished in the wake of Nazi occupation. Twenty-five years later; Theo Richmond set out to find what he could about that vanished world. He traveled across the United States; Europe; and Israel; tracing survivors and sifting through archives and the stories of those he interviewed. A project he thought would take six months took seven years. Finally he confronted the Konin of today. Interweaving past and present; Konin tells the story of one community--how it began; how it flourished; and how it ended--and in the process re-creates the precariousness; anguish and necessity of human memory."A fascinating memorial to a lost community and the people who lived there."--The New York Times Book Review"One reads [it] sometimes with a smile...always on the edge of tears--as if it were the most gripping adventure story."--Elie Wiesel; New York Newsday

NOBODY Captures Hidden History Like Timothy Egan...PERIOD!!!By William DahlHaving lived in the Pacific Northwest the vast majority of my life; reading this book I realized just how ignorant I am about its history. Timothy Egan takes you on a grand tour of the region; using characters you have likely never heard of. That’s just one element of Egan’s magical gift.I have read 5 Egan books in the last ten days – have one on the shelf and another in my cart on-line. That’ll mean I’ve read ALL of Egan’s books in two weeks. I read approximately 100 books a year. I have for decades. I have NEVER read consecutive volumes of one author’s books – one after another – until I ran into Egan.Reading Egan is an adventure – a particularly satisfying and unique one. I have few favorite authors. Egan is now in my top 3. PERIOD. His work is just than damn good…better than good…it’s hard to put into words my appreciation for this man’s literary talent. A MASTER storyteller.LOVED this book. BUY IT! – – – NOW!Warning: After you read The Good Rain – you’ll be hooked on Timothy Egan…trust me…0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Cascadia Revealed..... Still A Brilliant Work... Moves You Through This Land Like No OtherBy EyewandersI read this book first around 1995; still in college in Seattle. Since then I've read it at least 4 more times - and I never re-read books as anyone that knows me can tell you. This one is different. So much has changed in the PNW even since this was written; but much remains the same. I consider this the definitive book about "Cascadia".... this Salish Sea land... This Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. I'm sure I'll read it a fair number more times. You should as well.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great book!By CustomerThis book was very readable; it chronicles various aspects of the history of the Northwest; with a focus on Washington. Topics discussed are the exploration of the Northwest coast; timber; farming and fishing in Washington; and dams and atomic bomb development. He has an environmentalist's view on the industries and its affect on people; both in farming and on Native Americans. He ties history; environmentalism and economy together in a very readable way. Recommended for anyone with an interest in Washington economic and social history.
