The Gentlemen and the Roughs: Violence; Honor; and Manhood in the Union Army

PDF The Gentlemen and the Roughs: Violence; Honor; and Manhood in the Union Army by Lorien Foote in History

Description

The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. It is an epic narrative of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kauravas and the Pandava princes as well as containing philosophical and devotional material; such as a discussion of the four goals of life. Here we have Udyoga Parva; the fifth; features the preparathis for war and efforts to bring about peace between the Kurus and the Pandavas. Vyasa is a revered figure in Hindu traditions. He is a kala-Avatar or part-incarnation of God Vishnu. Vyasa is sometimes conflated by some Vaishnavas with Badarayana; the compiler of the Vedanta Sutras and considered to be one of the seven Chiranjivins. He is also the fourth member of the Rishi Parampara of the Advaita Guru Paramparā of which Adi Shankara is the chief proponent.

TrottI was intrigued by this book when I heard Dr. Foote interviewed on the Art of Manliness podcast. I am so happy to be reading it. As I move through the book; I find myself having those "Aha" moments where the light goes on. So much of the world is based on honor and shame and the various ways of establishing it. It is not something that the "modern" Western worldview understands. More is the pity. Looking back with Dr. Foote at the Union Army and manliness; I feel more equipped to look out toward the world. Dr. Foote's writing style is both engaging and scholarly and not-at-all dry. And; in a fun way; I feel like I understand Westerns and discussions about the West. I recommend this book. And the Art of Manliness podcast.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well written and great read.By Carole CollopyBought the 2 books as gifts.
