The French overthrew their absolute monarchy in the early 1790s. The political regime was both popular and open; but certain events like a population explosion and famine caused a prefect storm which ensured Louis XVI losing both his crown and head. A long list of idealists like Danton; Robespierre; and Murat shake up events but in the end also get their due.This is a short read which will explain the basics. At a little over 150 pages; you will understand what happened in France in 1789. However; you will not have all the details on the political regime that fell. Louis XVI was not an evil man; but his political leadership lacked a lot; and this caused the basic political structure to be overthrown in a relatively short time.This is a nice balanced read.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poorly-written; considering he's a historian.By Eric B.This guy may know his stuff; but his writing style is so off-putting that it is hard to pay attention without noticing the many grammatical errors and poor sentence structure. Maybe in the new $95 version; or whatever ridiculous cost they have for this book nowadays; is acceptable and maybe even readable. However; unless this is absolutely mandatory for a class; do not purchase this book. And; if you aren't convinced at my rating; buy a used one for sixty-eight cents instead of buying it new.
