Nostalgic return to yesteryearBy Red Label in FLTHE FLEET ANGELS OF LAKEHURST by Barbara MarriottI very much enjoyed Barbara's book about the "Fleet Angels". As a former member; I found the historical trace accurate; the sequencing exceptionally easy to follow and the 'personalization' given to so many of the members delightful. The Squadron personnel changed many times throughout the Squadron's lifetime; but the mission and the accomplishments were always primary and carried out with pride and professionalism. What a tribute to the many who did their respective jobs; without much fanfare most of the time; yet willingly laid it on the line for others.A great read and a story that deserved to be told. Thanks Barbara for the compilation of the historical happenings that lasted for so many years; to the many shipmates and friends and most of all to the unselfish givers who made it all possible - your story does you credit in the pages of this book. I highly recommend it!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Fleet Angel's Tradition lives on ..By Retired 0-6As a former Fleet Angel from 1968 to 1971; this book through it's "war stories" format is like sitting in the Ready Room on any given day with your squadron coffee cup full and just sharing your experiences. The Ready Room was like a classroom; it was where you learned from the "old salts" about how a 9 month detachment at sea works ... including the SAR heroics and lessons learned by them. It's where the traditions were passed on -- and the book brings that environment back to life. Barbara Marriottt included a unique INDEX that was inserted at the end that alphabetically listed the names of over 550+ pilots and aircrewmen + the pages where their story is immortalized ... GREAT CONCEPT> If you are a former HU-2 or HC-2 Fleet Angel; you will recognize many of the 500+ names.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My dad was one of the early pilots (helicopter license was something like number 52) and I was born at Lakehurst but not much about all the types they tested or the pilots they trained and sent to the fleet. Appears more someone reminiscing rather than researching.
