There are a lot of books about the battles at Gettysburg; Fredericksburg; etc but what makes this book so interesting is the story of what life was like; on a personal level; for these soldiers. I came away with a much deeper appreciation of what my ancestor and his brothers went through. I learned; among many other things; what an elite group they were due to the many battles in which they had fought. The daily struggle to survive on minimal rations and poor quality clothing and uniforms. Two of my great great uncles were captured and taken to a POW camp called Ft. Delaware. I was aware of this. However; in this book I learned what a terrible existence they went through to survive that hell hole. This personal story of survival is what sets this book apart from all the other Civil War books I have read. All though this particular story is specific to the 15th it none the less is descriptive for what most of the soldiers must have experienced. This is a very interesting and moving story and that is why I highly recommend this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Valuable work of historyBy robert3124This book provides a short overview of the formation of the volunteer infantry regiment; their transport by rail to the Richmond area; descriptions of the battles in which they fought; both in the east and the west; their conduct in those battles; and what they soldiers and their commanders were saying and doing. For genealogy enthusiasts obsessed with detail and who have ancestors who fought in that unit (such as myself); it's a gold mine of information. The bibliography is also extremely valuable. But as a stand-alone book of history; written from the Confederate point of view; it is quite good. Well-written; it is powerful in describing the sense of optimism in the east prior to Gettysburg; and then the gradually accumulating gloom as the situation deteriorated afterward. My emotions while reading the book shifted accordingly and; at the final surrender at Appomattox Court House; I felt in some small way the sense of exhaustion that must have been felt by the surviving soldiers of the Confederate Army. Over the course of the war; over sixteen hundred men enrolled in the regiment. At the surrender in April 1865; only two or three hundred remained. Nearly all of the rest were killed; died of their wounds; died of disease; were captured; or were discharged for various honorable reasons. The book made clear that these men gave everything they had in the service of their cause. Regardless of whether they were right in the larger sense; they must be respected for that.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Worth the read!By Val MGreat for historical research.
