Revealing Islam’s formative influence on literary Romanticism; Islam and Romanticism traces a lively lineage of interreligious exchange; surveying the impact of Muslim sources on the West’s most seminal authors. Spanning continents and centuries; the book surveys Islamic receptions that bridge Romantic periods and personalities; unfolding from Europe to Britain and America; and embracing figures from Goethe to Byron and Emerson. Broad in historical scope; Islam and Romanticism is also specific in personal detail — exposing Islam’s role as a creative catalyst — but also as a spiritual resource; with the Qur’an and Sufi poetry infusing Western literary publications.Highlighting cultural encounter; rather than political exploitation; the book differs from previous treatments by accenting Western receptions that transcend mere Orientalism; finding the genesis of a global literary culture first emerging in the Romantics’ early appeal to Islamic traditions.

An Excellent BookBy Bob RothmanHow can one person make so many observations and connections? Apparently Ms. Darwish has the type of analytical mind that allows someone like de Tocqueville; Custine or Volney to see where a society is going and articulate the observations. She states bluntly that there is not going to be democratic progress in the Middle East and explains why. She also explains why there is never going to be peace in the Middle East; not with Israel; the west or each other. As she explains it; Shira Law is a type of social suicide pack. After reading her book one understands that attempts to achieve peace between Israel and an Arab state are pointless. Such an event would strike at one of the pillars of Islam; Jews and Judaism; as are all other religions; are inherently inferior to Islam. Acceptance of them is an admission that Islam is a fraud; an admission that could cost an individual his life. War; hate and terrorism are how Islam can compete.Considering the number of observations she makes some are bound to be questionable. I disagree with some of her statements about US society. Then again I have to remember she is writing on the basis of her experiences in the Los Angeles area where the people are not as well grounded as here in west Nebraska.BTW reproduced in the book is a fatwa from Al Azhar University in Cairo; ordering the murder of an apostate from Islam who resides in the west. Recall Al Azhar is where our deep thinking President gave his speech saluting Islamic tolerance as opposed to western repression. I wonder if the students at Al Azhar got extra credit for murdering apostates or if that is just part of a take home exam?0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. intelligent and eye openingBy Douglas R BrownNonie Darwish; besides having lived the Muslim life herself in Egypt; is a thorough researcher who communicates clearly and identifies her sources. Her repetitive message is that Muslims do not wish to destroy the USA; they NEED to own it. Her case development is logical; concise; intelligent and eye opening. Every US citizen could learn exactly what this impersonation of a religion is really about and how; why and who the master plan to overcome the USA will be orchestrated
