The basis for the upcoming HBO miniseries and the "definitive account of the Jonestown massacre" (Rolling Stone) -- now available for the first time in paperback. Tim Reiterman’s Raven provides the seminal history of the Rev. Jim Jones; the Peoples Temple; and the murderous ordeal at Jonestown in 1978. This PEN Award–winning work explores the ideals-gone-wrong; the intrigue; and the grim realities behind the Peoples Temple and its implosion in the jungle of South America. Reiterman’s reportage clarifies enduring misperceptions of the character and motives of Jim Jones; the reasons why people followed him; and the important truth that many of those who perished at Jonestown were victims of mass murder rather than suicide. This widely sought work is restored to print after many years with a new preface by the author; as well as the more than sixty-five rare photographs from the original volume.

CasterlineIf you read U.S. Civil War history you know of the Alabama and maybe its predecessor the Sumter. These ships were part of the Confederate navy and were subject to military discipline. The goal was to disrupt Union shipping thus interfering with supplies to the northern states and in other cases damaging the economic prospects of U.S. shipping companies. There are interesting insights on the conduct of the naval war. There are also interesting anecdotes on the way foreign governments treated the Confederate ships from a diplomatic; financial or even as to selling of coal and food perspective. To a great extent this is a travelogue as the Alabama travels around the world approaching its inevitable end at the guns of the Union Navy. The log and journals of Raphael Semmes were the basis of this book but he had assistance writing it. I found it worth reading but in recent years I have been quite interested in memoirs and diaries from the civil war period. If you aren't this might not be for you.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Really great read! awesome history.By CustomerI read the whole book in two days. OrlichThe naval warfare between the North and South is hardly discussed in our schools. This book records the first hand account by a principal combatant for the South reflecting attitudes and outlooks not found in text books. Our Civil War occurred during a period of religious revival that intensified the dedication of both sides to their causes. This is reflected in the loss of life and limb that exceeds all other wars in American history.
