Unknown to the general public; detailed logbooks of most Civil War vessels have survived and now lie in the National Archives. Using research from these and other official records; the author has written detailed accounts of the most important events in Civil War maritime history; including battles; amphibious assaults; shipwrecks; court-martials; and even the yellow fever epidemics of 1862 and 1864.

For twenty plus years now; I have read everything this great Catholic author has written. He has opened my eyes to countless other writers with his references; as well. I have shared all his books with my classes;--and with my own sons. From his "take" on the pharaohs to his account of the Fall of Jerusalem ; from the rise of evil in the Russian revolution to his dissection of the French Revolution and the defense of Cortez-- sweeeping panoramic appraisals of HISTORY writ spiritually large; with illumination and inspiration;full of truth and memorable lines. Stirring; like the speech Henry V makes to his troops before Agincourt in the Shakespeare play. He is a Teacher whose teaching was; and is; blessed by the Holy Spirit. His work is amazingly comprehensive. At the same time; it contains marvelous vignettes of individual characters and colorful accounts of pivotal battle scenes. Unashamedly Catholic in the way he deals with church-related events and figures; accepting the traditional view of Divine Providence and the authenticity of miracles such as those that occurred at Lourdes and Fatima; he is also cosmopolitan enough in his outlook to appeal to everyone.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It is an excellent and updated source in the study of Modern Church ...By Emilio Edgardo A. QuilatanThis book on Church History touches the modern period and it gives us a review of the last century and the role of the Holy Father in shaping our Catholic Church today; i.e.; from the pontificate of Leo XIII to the reign of Pope Benedict XVI. The political scenario gives us the historical background on how the Catholic experienced the world she is living in and how she responded to its challenges. It is an excellent and updated source in the study of Modern Church History.
