Description

The method of understanding the process of jnana yoga has to be understood properly. Is jnana only questioning? No.It is enlarging the scope of perception. It is not enquiry. It is like working with an adjustable torchlight. You can twist it's head to bring the light to a narrow point or enlarge its perimeter. Providing a new perspective on the classical components of jnana yoga;Swamiji renders this complicated subject accessible. He outlines the step-by-step training necessary to attain the aims of jnana yoga and describes how the profound statements of the Vedas;the mahavakyas;unfold naturally in the process. The discourses shine with spiritual inspiration and practical guidance in the method of applying intelligence and developing true wisdom in life._x000D_ The Petersburg campaign was a long siege operation of grueling trench warfare marked by bloody battles; incompetence; political maneuvering and cowardice. It was the type of campaign neither the Union nor the Confederacy wanted. The conflict around the Virginia town led to the decline of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and the surrender of the Confederate capital at Richmond. After the fall of Petersburg; the end of the Civil War was only a matter of days. Special charts cover strengths and losses for both sides; Confederate desertion rates; and statistics for the Civil War's other sieges. Sidebars discuss styles of command; the Crater explosion; the role of snipers and sharpshooters; and the campaign's no-quarter encounters between Southern whites and Union men of color._x000D_ Albert Nofi has used his many years of research to produce an account of the battle of Waterloo that has all the grandeur and military detail one could want; but which never loses its interest in individual human experience. Here Napoleon rides forward to take personal command of a small detachment of French Marines to fight his way across the Sambre river on the way to Waterloo. Hanoverian exiles who have been fighting Napoleon for a decade under English command are surrounded and wiped out in a classic last stand" at the hour of victory. The Waterloo Campaign also covers the death of the Duke of Brunswick; the reconciliation of Napoleon and his estranged brother Jerome in the crucible of battle; and the tragic loss and miraculous delivery of many ordinary people. In addition to its popular appeal; Albert Nofi's The Waterloo Campaign has found favor with the most demanding of military enthusiasts. Waterloo is a Military Book Club Main Selection in the U.S. and has been selected for a special European edition. Special features of The Waterloo Campaign include the most complete orders of battle available for the British; French and Prussian armies; a detailed comparison of artillery and musketry capabilities; sidebars profiling many of the personalities of the campaign; weather conditions for each hour of the battle and the best-informed estimates available on unit strengths and casualties; for horses as well as humans; during the campaign.New York educator Albert Nofi appeared frequently as a radio and TV military commentator during the Persian Gulf War; always balancing the grand principles of command against the individual human drama. He is the author of numerous books; including The Spanish American War 1898; The Marine Corps Book of Lists; and The War Against Hitler.

Carroll (1932-2011) was a leading conservative Catholic historian and author; and the founder of Christendom College; he was a convert to Catholicism in 1968. Previously; he had also served as an analyst in the CIA's anti-communism division; and he also served on the staff of Congressman John G. Schmitz. This third volume was first published in 1993. The next volume in this series is The Revolution Against Christendom: A History of Christendom; Vol. 5.Of Pope Leo X; Carroll wrote; "Even the most loyal Catholics did not think of Leo X as a spiritual man. It has always been Church teaching that the authority of any ecclesiastical office is not affected by the personal shortcomings of the man who holds it; but this is not a doctrine easy for men to accept fully; especially in the face of a propagandist of the shattering power of Martin Luther." (Pg. 9) But even in the time of John Calvin; "enough of Europe still remained Catholic so that; if the Council (of Trent) listened to the promptings of the Holy Spirit; much of Christendom could still be saved." (Pg. 284)He points out that "the total number of persons executed as heretics during Queen Mary's reign does not compare with those executed as loyal Catholics during ... the 45-year reign of (Queen) Elizabeth; despite the fact that Protestant historians have dubbed her 'Good Queen Bess' in contrast to 'Bloody Mary.'" (Pg. 251) He asserts; "The Inquisition and the Crusades ... were far better and far more defensible than their popular image today suggests. The St. Bartholomew's Day massacre is not in that category." (Pg. 371)Concerning the Galileo affair; Carroll points out that Galileo in his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems: Ptolemaic and Copernican put in the mouth of "Simplicio; a dunce" arguments which Pope Urban VIII himself had proposed to him; and "the Pope was furious because of this." Nevertheless; he adds; "The Church never ruled the Copernican theory a heresy"; Galileo was instead convicted of "disobedience." (Pg. 538-539)Those wanting a strongly "conservative" Catholic interpretation of Christian history will find Carroll's series compelling (and reassuring).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Promising first look; great serviceBy SissyI haven't read the book in its entirety; but when I received it; I opened it at random and was hooked - twenty pages later; I reminded myself that I had other things to do and forced myself to put it down (hence the four stars.) I now understand why this book is well-reviewed; and look forward to using it for the rest of my daughter's history class this year. I was also pleased with the quick; trouble-free delivery.
