A unique insight into the Army of Northern Virginia and Catholic life during the Civil WarBy Corran HornAlong with Sister Betty Ann Mcneil's Balm of Hope Balm of Hope; this is one of the most valuable published primary sources on the Catholic experience during the American Civil War. I wish there was something comparable written during the war from a Northern clergyman's perspective. The editor wisely stays away from evaluating the finer details of Sheeran's battle narratives and instead presents the diary unabridged with only necessary annotation. Sheeran's views are keen; incisive; and often rephrehensible from a modern point of view; but they give you a very good window into daily life in the Army of Northern Virginia. Yes; there is some editing after the war in this diary; but it's stories are much closer to being recorded at the time they happened than say those in William Corby's Memoirs of a Chaplain Life which was written from memory.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy J Mooney JrBut I'm a nut for Civil War History and the Redemptorists.
