While this book has wonderful photos and great historical details of blocks from the civil war; there are no directions to make the blocks. I do give it 3 stars though for the historical interest of the book. There are short excerpts from diaries of various women written during the civil war. One gets a closer look; more personal if you will; look in to what the civilians of the time endured during the war. I do look forward to sitting down and reading through the excerpts. There are photos of popular blocks of that time; with great drawings showing the parts of the block so that one can replicate them. However; one does have to draw them off and guess at the measurements. Fortunately I have excellent software for the computer that I can draw the block in to and then the software will generate a template or rotary directions for me.Definitely not a book for the beginner quilter. I would consider myself an intermediate beginner; not just starting out; but still need to learn a lot; and if I didn't have my computer program am not sure I would be able to create any of the blocks. There are 121 blocks listed in the book. That works out to 11 blocks across and 11 blocks down. With that many blocks; they will have to be on the smaller side.If you want a book for the historical value; get it. If you want a book that will give you detailed directions to replicate a civil war quilt; don't get it.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. the patterns of lives in colors of threads of reb and union womenBy niki terryThe thoughts and daily activities of several civil war era women both very young and very old of varring religious beliefs and backgrounds. This book is a nice read on a cold afternoon snuggling up on a couch or as a less time consuming interest book. I was personally surprised and delighted to hear of my old hometown mentioned within it;(Coldwater; Mi). Connections to your own past may be here and you may feel it is so to hear of one writer; a bridesmaid to General Custers wife or of a small child crying for her brother not to go off to war who was then lost; finding a link to her brother so many years later. Read how farmers' of many places were forced to take in soldiers first from one side; then from another to feed them and their animals and put them up for the night. (200 soldiers just popping in at dusk) and of their dangers they faced closer to Virginia that they were. Included in between the diary pages; seperating authors diary entry pages from each other are themed quilt pieces with instructions and templates on how to make them; including a doll dress design at the back.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. nice civil war bookBy JULII really loved this book. It has some really pretty blocks in it to put together a really pretty civil war quilt. So if you want to put together a theme; civil war quilt a really recommend this book.
