However; the title is somewhat inaccurate. Although a few of the narrations dealt with the breeding of slaves; the book is mainly about the lives of children in slavery during the 1850s and 60s. The narrators were mostly former slaves; plus a few children of former slaves who learned about slavery from their parents. The book was not totally well- assembled; as some stories were repeated. But I found myself fascinated by these stories; because they are literally LIVING HISTORY. It is one thing to read about slavery in an American history textbook:it is another thing to read the words of a person who actually LIVED through it. What also struck me was the fact that these people really did not live all that long ago; and that slavery existed in our country in comparatively recent history. Anyone interested in American history should read this book. It is fascinating but sobering.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Hoq unthinkable.By Big JohnThis was a way of life that most never thought about. The breeding of slaves for profit. A part of southern slavery that would never have crossed my mind. Slaverly in AmericaBy Minnie McDowellThis book is easy to read although the subject matter is horrible. It gives first hand knowledge of how salvage slave were treated. How they were treated like animals.
