I especially like that the author uses the soldiers' own words to make a point.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy E. WagnerGreat book; rich in detail; good references. War of the Rebellion Western StyleBy TERRY A DELBENE author of 'Dem Bon'zThe Civil War in the West was something different than the war in the East. Instead of vast armies slugging it out in the forests and fields the venue of combat shifted to the vast expanses of the Great Western Desert. The Civil War period saw the largest of America's Indians Wars. The tiny garrisons left in the West contended with a better prepared and more united foe; using new tactics. This book is the story of one company of the many volunteers who signed up to fight Confederates and found themselves fighting Indians. In a strange twist of fate many such volunteers found themselves fighting alongside Confederate prisoners of war who decided it was better to be out of prison and became "Galvanized Yankees." The books is a fascinating read and a great companion to books like Tending the Talking Wire and Dangerous Duty. This will be a welcome addition to any library on the West.
