The writer has documented history throughout this book and brought it all to life. Magnificent and horrible!!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not as good as I expectedBy Librarian JanetFor every person's story; Cohn provides copious amounts of background information on the location; the history; and how Jews were treated in the region in the past few centuries. I realize this is done in order to place each story in the proper context; but I ended up skimming most of it. Even the stories themselves lost a lot of the immediacy for me because they are filtered through Cohn. There seemed to be very few direct quotes (that I could see at least). Add in the numerous grammatical errors and typos; and odd turns of phrase; and this was not as good a book as I was expecting it to be.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. HeartbreakerBy Bob MCohn is a good listener and she had collected a series of true life episodes from the real history lived by her subjects; the Holocaust survivors. It is important to read these stories and to know that these horrible things happened and the people who lived to tell about it should be heard. History is tough and this collection of real survivor stories reminds us not to ever forget what people can do to other people. Read this book and tell others to read it and take it very seriously.
