Immigrants in America are at the heart of what makes this country the most prosperous and visionary in the world. Writing from his own heartfelt perspective as an immigrant; Jorge Ramos; one of the world’s most popular and well-respected Spanish-language television news broadcasters; listens to and explores stories of dozens of immigrants who decided to change their lives and risk everything -- families; jobs; history; and their own culture -- in order to pursue a better; freer; and opportunity-filled future in the United States. In his famously clear voice; Jorge Ramos brings to life the tales of individuals from Mexico; Puerto Rico; Cuba; and the Dominican Republic; among other countries; and explains why they first immigrated; what their dreams are; how they deal with American racism; and what they believe their future in America will hold for them and their children. From the Vieques controversy to the "Spanglish" phenomenon to the explosion of Latino creativity in the arts; Ramos shows that there is a new face in America -- one whose colors and countries of origin are as diverse as the country it has adopted as home.

Great Story/Good BookBy KJAGThe story of these brothers and their plight; along with those they sheltered; and that of the Jewish populace in the region; is more fantastic than even the movie could convey. The hardships and threats to the group's survival were even greater to the brothers and their group than indicated in the movie. The book covers in detail the mass killings and attacks that took two of the brother's wives; a child; their parents; and two other brothers; and the brothers' efforts to convince and assist Jews in escaping their captors. What is also not in the movie: they actually were forced to move their camp many times to escape the Germans; the population was often separated into two or three different camps at a time; their existence was threatened not only by the Germans; but also the local police working for the Germans; many local peasants (some of who were rewarded for turning in Jews); Polish partisans; and Russian partisans. Some malcontents in the camp tried to convince the Russians the Bielski brothers were not loyal to their cause. It was only Tuvia's diplomatic skills and efforts that kept them shielded from Russian efforts to strip the group of their fighters and leave the old; young; weak; and the women to fend for themselves; and the Russians from carrying out an execution order on one of the brothers. The book is informative and well-written; but I did not find it engrossing. It is written more in the fashion of "this is what occurred;" vs. "you are there;" which the best authors are able to do to make it more of an emotional experience. Never-the-less; a good; informative; balanced book by this first-time author; and I recommend it. I just wish some reviewers would stick to reviewing the book itself; not their story or the movie.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and it makes the story drawn out and rather boring. It is filled with names of people in the story that most people couldn't even pronounce; and it makes the story drawn out and rather boring. I wanted to read this book because the movie Definance was excellent and I thought the book would go into more detail; but it didn't. Normally; I will read a book that holds my interest in about three days; but I have been laboring through this book for three weeks already.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bielsky BookBy J.RiveraAfter seeing the movie "Defiance" which is about the Bielsky Brothers that saved approximately 1200 Jews during the Nazi regime; I had to read the story. It is a triumphant story that takes you through the hardships and survivor techniques that they used. It is a heart wrenching story that allows one to feel weak and helpless. Through their perserverance and will to survive; makes this story a must read. I would encourage everyone and anyone to read about the Bielsky Brothers. It is a shame that they were never acknowledged for their resistance.
