Debating Bayou City SportsBy Eric MayforthHouston's professional and college sports teams have provided many memorable moments over the past half-century. There have been several near-misses and disappointments; but there were also the back-to-back NBA titles that the Rockets won in 1994 and 1995. In "The Best Houston Sports Arguments;" author Jose de Jesus Ortiz sifts through some of the most common debates that Bayou City sports fans engage in.Ortiz looks back at the history of the Astros; Rockets; and Texans; offering his opinions about players; coaches and managers; venues; announcers; owners; front offices; and draft picks; and recalls some of the most important games; teams; and individual performances in the city's sports history. The author also looks at local college sports and briefly covers other sports in the area. The book was written in 2007; meaning that some opinions about controversies; heroes and villains; and overrated and underrated figures seem dated nearly a decade later. Those of us who thought even in 2006 that the Texans made the right choice in taking Mario Williams with the first pick in that year's NFL draft will find the author's strong disagreement on that score the weakest of his arguments. The one quibble I had with the book was that the football section talked almost exclusively about the Texans' brief history up through 2007. The Oilers are mentioned in the book only sparingly and the section on football would have been much better had it included more recollections on their tenure in the city.I moved to Houston in 1994 after college; when I already had my rooting allegiances formed. I still found the book interesting and engaging; and even though the book is nearly a decade old I imagine that any sports fan native to the area who roots for the local franchises would find "The Best Houston Sports Arguments" a worthwhile read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Looking backBy ACWhile the book is a nice conversation starter I think the author would have changed a few things if he wrote it in 2010 as opposed to 2007. He brings up the Bush/Young/ Williams "controversy" a number of times and looking back the Texans made a better choice. He should have waited a few years before commenting on such recent events. So if you want to spark an argument using events from 2006 and earlier then it's a good book. Other wise skip it and make your own arguments.
