The Battle of Natural Bridge; Florida: The Confederate Defense of Tallahassee

audiobook The Battle of Natural Bridge; Florida: The Confederate Defense of Tallahassee by Dale Cox in History

Description

Whitewashing the South is a powerful exploration of how ordinary white southerners recall living through extraordinary racial times—the Jim Crow era; civil rights movement; and the post-civil rights era—highlighting tensions between memory and reality.Author Kristen Lavelle draws on interviews with the oldest living generation of white southerners to uncover uncomfortable memories of our racial past. The vivid interview excerpts show how these lifelong southerners reflect on race in the segregated South; the civil rights era; and more recent decades. The book illustrates a number of complexities—how these white southerners both acknowledged and downplayed Jim Crow racial oppression; how they both appreciated desegregation and criticized the civil rights movement; and how they both favorably assessed racial progress while resenting reminders of its unflattering past. Chapters take readers on a real-world look inside The Help and an exploration of the way the Greensboro sit-ins and school desegregation have been remembered; and forgotten.Digging into difficult memories and emotions; Whitewashing the South challenges our understandings of the realities of racial inequality.

BohneThis book is not the best Civil War battle description I have read; but it certainly not the worst. It started out a bit dry; and I had to press on to finish. My determination was rewarded. The work is a great look at the use of black troops in the Union army... and did you know the Confederacy was even trying to raise black Companies? I sure didn't. I will agree that the roll call and wounded/deceased list took up the lion's share of the book. Mr. Cox would be well served to pay someone on Fiver a few bucks to clean up the book's formatting overall... way too many blank pages. But if you want to learn some REAL history about the Civil War... and not the warmed over bullpuckey taught in our public schools... then you owe it to yourself to read this one. Just understand the author approaches the book much like a textbook in direct opposition to the writing style of Stephen Ambrose; or similar writers. There is much to learn.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This highly researched account of the Natural Bridge battle is amazing in terms of factsBy Martin SvenssonIf you ever wished to know all the intimate details of a relatively small American Civil War battle...this is the book. This highly researched account of the Natural Bridge battle is amazing in terms of facts. The reader can know what happened down to the individual soldier! Dale Cox's work on Florida ACW battles is outstanding. This book is the definitive source.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great little Battle history!By Michael B.I found this description of the battle of Natural Bridge to be very interesting. I've read one opinion that it was a distraction to pull reinforcements away from the Mobile campaign but after reading this book I now know it had nothing to do with it. The abundant sources of witnesses from both sides is very good in this; as most accounts are in Quarterly type articles or the occassional story of a participant. One of the units mentioned in the book was served in by my GGGrandfather. It was one of the mistakes that I've seen in most past articles. Capt Henry Abel's Company B (Milton Light Artillery [FL])was no where near the battle at that time having been sent to Savannah; GA in 1864 and then in the Carolinas campaign until the surrender. The book on the "Battle of Marianna" by the author was great so I tried this one. He has one more that I'll try next which is in the Trans-Mississippi Dept of the War between the States. If your interested in Florida's war betwen the states history I recommend his books on Marianna and Natural Bridge.
