Wonderful civilian eyewitness accounts of GettysburgBy Bill A.I've never bothered to take the time to write a review before; but this book is so outstanding; I had to write this. We're planning a trip to Gettysburg in August and want to stay at the Tillie Pierce BB; so I thought I'd pick up her book and read it again. I read it quite a few years ago; but I had forgotten how amazing and moving her experiences were. The things Tillie saw and did are truly remarkable. What an inspiring story! Daniel Skelly's story is also very interesting; especially his dealings with the soldiers on both sides. The photographs in this book serve as a grim reminder of just how horrifying it was to experience not only the battle; but to have to deal with the thousands of dead and wounded; not to mention the thousands of dead horses; etc. I've read that the stench of death hung over the town for weeks afterward. The maps were very helpful; and the section on the Gettysburg Address brought tears to my eyes. That picture of Lincoln delivering the Address; surrounded by dignitaries and civilians and soldiers... I'm glad the text and photos of a handwritten manuscript were included. There are three short introductory pieces; all of which do a fine job of setting the scene for the wonderful accounts written by Piere and Skelly. This is a particularly outstanding edition and perfect to give to any young man or woman to read. I believe this book should be required reading in every High School. I give it my highest recommendation.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Special and real PerspectiveBy mcipdThe memories recounted here provide an unusual and interesting perspective to one of the greatest battles of the Civil War. The actual experiences of two teenagers - each extremely different on its own - convey details and personal feelings that a historian cannot relate effectively. This is especially meaningful to young students in establishing the realities of the Gettysburg battle.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
