Here's a useful companion to this fine bookBy Chris AndersenI found this book riveting and an easy way to understand why the world is the way it is today; especially what influenced the spread of culture. However the rankings of the author (which I do not disagree with) loses its relevancy after the first 10 or so. I found myself wishing I could read thru them in chronological order. To that end and for the benefit of other readers I transcribed the table of contents onto a spreadsheet and sorted by date. I now plan to re-read the book in chronological order. The link to my work is at:[...]If anyone wants to add columns for the combatants and location country please be my guest.Enjoy the book.Chris Andersen0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Engaging military history; author bias notwithstandingBy Irene RingwormExcellent book and a great introduction to military history for older children. Lanning has written short (2-4 page) summaries recounting battles from ancient and modern history and ranked them in order of influence. The summaries themselves are excellent; providing as much information on tactical details as on the battles' context in history. The military history aspect is frank and dispassionate and falls far short of glorifying war. Some readers may take issue with the rankings and commentary; which reflect an unapologetic American exceptionalism; but the book as a whole remains accessible and enjoyable. Highly recommended.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good resourceBy T BrownThis is a good "on the bookshelf" resource to always have on hand. It has a good overview of the major historical battles and some of the lesser known ones. This is a great resource for any history teacher who may get questions about military history; it was one of my go to resources in my classroom.
