This book is a priorityBy Verardi GiovanniThis is an extremely important book; which should be read and read again by all the students of Indian history. The focus is on the Guptas (fourth to sixth century AD); but the model they established; in terms of social relationships and religious history; goes far beyond their rule; affecting medieval India.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This isn't just another Indian history bookBy Joseph G. WalserThis is not just another book about Indian history or even Gupta history. Willis not only has a command of a wide range of material (from archaeology; to law; to ritual texts); but he is able to bring this knowledge to bear on his material in a manner that is both strikingly creative and forcefully argued. This book is really a breath of fresh air for anyone working on early Indian history. I am a bit surprised that the book is not better known. I fully agree with Giovanni's review this book really is a "must read;" for anyone interested in early India.Joseph Walser
