Exquisite Technical Drawings; Lacking In Post-War DataBy Daryl CarpenterAlthough it's only the second book in the "Anatomy of the Ship" series; this slim book on the Essex-class carrier "Intrepid" is an excellent sophomore effort. The main focus is on technical drawings; depicting in detail the ship's general arrangement; hull construction; machinery; and weapons. Robert's fastidious attention to detail is evident throughout; whether it's in a cross-section through an armor bolt; a close-up of a dog on a quick-acting door; or a perspective view of the navigating bridge that shows every piece of equipment contained within. The arrangement of hull plating; the layout of protective plating; flight deck equipment; even fittings such as watertight doors and rope reels; are all depicted.Unfortunately; there isn't a single drawing or photograph of the ship's appearance after World War II; and no information on the ship's hull form. The introduction is pretty short and skims over the ship's history in a couple pages. Then again; I buy these books for the schematics; and as someone fascinated by naval architecture; I'm happy to see so many high-quality drawings in a single title. Not something that will thrill anyone looking for a narrative history of the ship; but serious naval enthusiasts will love it.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Review of this bookBy visaThis book consists of photo copies of the original excellent book. However; the photo copies have been reduced in size and the diagrams are too small to be of any practical use; so I can't imagine why anyone would want to sell it - or buy it. The small size should be made very clear to potential buyers; in case they waste time and money buying it; only to discover the very small diagrams. I wanted to use the drawings of the Intrepid as reference for a model I was making; but I found this book was of no help.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Don't waste your money on poor quality reprintBy Robert HarrisonThis book is a reprint of a much larger book. The paper is is poor quality and the book is greatly reduced to the size of the average paper back pocket book. The extremely small print made if difficult to read. In the case of the diagrams; the print was so tiny I had to resort to a magnifying glass; and even than it was difficult to decipher. For my purpose; research on Essex class carriers; the book was worthless. Compared with the original this reprint was very substandard;
