SchwalmHarold Birch has created a detailed; nearly day by day; history of one of the most traveled units in the Union Army. I was drawn to this book in search of my Great Great Uncle Samuel Schwalm's service during the Civil War. Mr. Birch has provided a thorough review of the actions of the 50th along with intermingling personal stories of several of the members of the unit. I have used this book to walk in the "footsteps" of the 50th by visiting several of the battle fields near the 150th anniversary dates. I created a series of presentations linking the actual battle maps with current maps and photographs along with new historic references found in recently discovered letters from Samuel Schwalm to his wife Elizabeth to enhance Mr. Birch's already extensive history. I cross referenced Mr. Birch's text with many Civil War websites and historical resources which was fairly easy to do because of his specificity in describing numerous geographic site and battle action. This book is highly recommended for history buffs and the professional researcher alike as it is written in a wonderful story telling style often not found in history books. Mr. Birch has paid a high honor to "The Dirty Dutch" with this book. Ross H. Schwalm0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Gives credit wher credit is dueBy CherigWell researched and documented history using regiment histories and personal letters that focuses on the 50th Pennsylvania . I was impressed with how the fate of the private was and still is is in the hands of his superior officer. Battle diagrams are useful; but photographs are generally of poor quality.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Four StarsBy SkookinFLGreat Read!
