The 36th Infantry United States Colored Troops in the Civil War: A History and Roster

ePub The 36th Infantry United States Colored Troops in the Civil War: A History and Roster by James K. Bryant II in History

Description

In the most detailed history ever of Union warships on the western waters of the Civil War; the author recounts the exploits of the timberclad ships Lexington; Tyler; and Conestoga. Converted to warships from commercial steamboats at the beginning of the conflict; the three formed the core of the North's Western Flotilla; later the Mississippi Squadron. The book focuses on the activities of these wooden warriors while providing context for the greater war; including accounts of their famous commanders; their roles in both large and small battles; ship-to-ship combat; and support for the armies of Gen. U.S. Grant and Gen. William T. Sherman.

The 36th infantry USCT in the Civil WarBy Wade MacElwainAn excellent book--it is well researched; well written; and easy to understand when it comes to the complexities of southern; mainly North Carolina 2nd Regiment NCC Vols; African-Americans fighting for the Union. This book is a must read for those interested in the Civil War period in American history; and those who appreciate good; honest period research. It even includes a lenghty roster of the various regiments involved with the 36th USCT. A+++0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. If you're doing USCT research; you need this book.By Jerilyn J. LeeThis has a complete roster of all companies for the 36th; and great background information on the regiment. Great addition to my USCT library.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Account of the "Most Reliable Soldiers" of the 36th USCTBy A. A. NofiA summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:'Author Bryant; who has written several books on the Civil War; including The Battle of Fredericksburg (VA): We Cannot Escape History) gives us an interest account of one of nearly two hundred regiments of U.S. Colored Infantry. Originally formed as the 2nd North Carolina (African Descent); the 36th USCT; spent most of the Civil War performing local security duties and conducting sweeps into Confederate-held territory on the coast of North Carolina and in northeastern Virginia; in the process liberating literally thousands of enslaved people. From mid-1864 the regiment took part in operations against Petersburg and Richmond; Va.; and was engaged repeatedly from Chaffin's Farm to the occupation of Richmond. It was then transferred to Texas; where it mustered out on October 28; 1866; after three years service. Historian Bryant not only covers these events adequately; but also looks at the men who composed the regiment; giving us their background; mostly former slaves; with something of their lives; their occupations; and at times their futures. A useful addition to the literature on the USCT.'For the full review; see StrategyPage.Com
