Good storytellingBy JohnI used to live in the Republican River valley and heard a few comments about the flood from those who had relatives who remembered it. This book was great in telling many more details. I like how the book's content followed the flow of the flood from eastern Colorado to eastern portions of Kansas. The book has a "storytelling" feel to it rather than something academic. I like that. Good use of emotion and detail - neither dominates the other. If I have to be picky; I grew tired of the constant phrase "completely destroyed." I thought destroyed meant destroyed 100 percent. Using completely wasn't necessary. The flood is fascinating as it happened in a part of the country that is considered a dry climate and the weather pattern that caused the flood is extremely rare. That's the fascinating part of the book. Sure; the river has had high water levels since; but nothing like what caused the flood. I wonder if it could ever happen again? Photos added to the devastation of the flood. I learned a lot of new information of which I was unaware. I believe a great amount of research went into writing this book. Ms. Hayden did a superb job of recreating the devastation; destruction and despair of the hardy people who inhabited the Republican River Valley.
