The Civil War experience of the 10th Minnesota Volunteer Regiment resembles that of few other regiments. On the day the 10th Minnesota first mustered at Fort Snelling in August 1862; the Sioux Indian War broke out in western Minnesota. Soldiers who signed up to fight the Confederacy instead found themselves marching to defend the frontier and spending a year fighting two campaigns against the Sioux. When the 10th finally deployed south to fight the Confederate Army; it engaged in a series of skirmishes in the West; including battles at Tupelo and Nashville; and suffered many casualties. This chronicle merges the individual experiences of Union soldiers; Native Americans; and Confederates to offer a compelling; panoramic portrait of the 10th Minnesota during the Sioux Uprising and the Civil War; revealing the unwavering resolve of this remarkable regiment.

It took awhile to actually get the book; because cancelled my first order; claiming that it was out of stock. On my second try on the same day; it suddenly was in stock; and I received it a few days later.Reading this book really puts me in the shoes of my ancestors; two of whom fought in Company F of the 149th Pennsylvania. The detailed descriptions of the soldiers' movements; skirmishes; battles; and writings throughout their tour of duty brings them back to life; and puts the reader right there beside them. It does; however; make me feel sad for the generations of people who are unaware of their family's history; and even more sad for those who cannot read a book like this and become completely immersed in it.Although information is scant regarding Company F specifically; I will add this book to my collection of family data and treasure it for years to come.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
