It also shed light on Donitz; Eva Braun; her sister; Hitler; Raeder; etc. Very interesting.By CustomerI very rarely give 5 stars; but this is a solid 4 stars. I've read better books about sub commanders ... Iron Coffins is the best I've ever read by far ... but I was fascinated with his life after he was relieved of sea duty to teach tactics to new recruits. I thought I would be disappointed with the rest of the book after that; but I found the latter part of the book even more interesting than the first. Especially his personal meetings with Hitler; Donitz; Eva Braun; her sister; and quite a few of the admiralty and higher ups in the naval command. Well written and edited.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Interesting but a bit slowBy D. SlykerThis book was interesting but a bit slow. If you are looking for a story of exciting U-Boat action this is NOT it. However; the book does give glimpses into the processes of training WW2 German naval officers; and especially U-Boat officers; as well as information on the command structure of the U-Boat arm of the Kriegsmarine. Also; graduates of the US Naval and Coast Guard Academies will find similarities in their experiences and those of Teddy Suhren. If you are interested in the WW2 U-Boat world you should read this book. If you want U-Boat adventure read "Das Boot."3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good AutobiographyBy Phil SeifertThis is a good autobiography by Teddy Shuren. As such; it is not a book filled with detailed descriptions of a lot of war patrols and attacks; although they are present and we'd described as they pertain to those years of his career. The book covers a bit of his early life and schooling; then training prior to subs. Training in U_boats; then early parts of the war. Since Doenst wanted to save his experienced captains like Topp and Shuren to be trainers;the last third of the book or so describes that part of his career through the war's end and after. Since Teddy was not politically correct; the book does a good job showing the insights of commanders like him as to how the war at sea was being waged; including Doenst and others refusal to believe that Ultra has been compromised; moving new boats and crews to sea patrols before adequate training had been completed; etc. Since Teddy received multiple decorations; also shows his thoughts and reflections on ceremonies with Hitler and others. Again; if you're looking for a book that has 90 percent or more covering attacks and war patrols; this is not it - but if you want a good autobiography with genuine non-edited reflections and personal opinions from the German's perspective as the war progressed and the Allies anti-submarine warfare efforts improved; this book is the one you want.
