Western esotericism has been a pervasive presence in Western culture from late antiquity to the present day; but until recently it was largely ignored by scholars and surrounded by misconceptions and prejudice. This accessible guide provides readers with the basic knowledge and tools that will allow them to find their way in this bewildering but fascinating field. What is it that unites phenomena as diverse as ancient gnosticism and hermetism; the "occult sciences" of astrology; alchemy; and magic; rosicrucianism; as well as Christian theosophy; occultism; spiritualism; and the contemporary New Age spiritualities? What can the study of them teach us about our common cultural and intellectual heritage; and what is it that makes them relevant to contemporary concerns? How do we distinguish reliable historical knowledge from legends and fictions about esoteric traditions? These and many other questions are answered clearly and succinctly; so that the reader can find his way into the labyrinth of Western esotericism and out of it again.

We can all stand to give a little more-patience; love; understanding.By PriyaThis book gives insight on life in the LA projects and what it is like to be a priest in unfamiliar circumstances. I really appreciated understanding how Father Boyle and his "kids" grew with time and heartbreak. Ultimately; it is a bittersweet tale of what can happen if one is given support and opportunity. Father Boyle grows as much as his kids.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A REAL Christian in a time of much hypocrisyBy Wynne C. DimockAuthor is a GENUINE Christian who has been extremely effective in showing love to those never loved in childhood (IF they want help from theirself-destructive lifestyles); AND he helped them create highly successful work settings for themselves (largest tattoo removal center in the world;silkscreen business; a bakery; cafe and ? more ). He has focused on L.A. gang members; men and women. He is now internationally known where he speaks all over the world; and a large number of American cities with gang problems have tried to create similar programs in the USA. He is also a well-read Jesuit who quoted more than 90 philosophers; etc in his book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Heart-warming autobiography of a priest who meets young gang members ...By FaithHeart-warming autobiography of a priest who meets young gang members of LA on their turf and has supported them in many ways to change their lives. Very real. I learned a lot about the challenges these young people face and what they need to have a different kind of life.
