Taken at the Flood: Robert E. Lee and Confederate Strategy in the Maryland Campaign of 1862

ePub Taken at the Flood: Robert E. Lee and Confederate Strategy in the Maryland Campaign of 1862 by Joseph L. Harsh in History

Description

With lively narration; telling anecdotes; and vivid battlefield accounts; Michigan and the Civil War tells the story as never before of Michigan's heroic contributions to saving the Union. Beginning with Michigan's antebellum period and anti-slavery heritage; the book proceeds through Michigan's rapid response to President Lincoln's call to arms; its participation in each of the War's greatest battles; portrayal of its most interesting personalities; and the concluding triumph as Custer corners Lee at Appomattox and the 4th Michigan Cavalry apprehends the fleeing Jeff Davis. Based on thorough and up-to-date research; the result is surprising in its breadth; sometimes awe-inspiring; and always a revelation given how contributions by the Great Lake State in the Civil War are too often overlooked; even by its own citizens.

Review
10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Ultimate Antietam BookBy Space EnthusiastHarsh thoroughly examines the 1862 Maryland campaign mostly from the standpoint of General Lee. He bases his judgments on Lee's correspondence with President Davis and others. In this; Harsh demystifies Lee and shows the great problems that Lee faced. Lee comes off as not so brilliant and General McClellan as not so inept. The book is essentially a continuation of Harsh's Confederate Tide Rising: Robert E. Lee and the Making of Southern Strategy; 1861-1862; which should be read first. The reasons for why the Battle of Antietam was fought the way it was in September 1862 become clear after reading Harsh. His two books taken together are essential to understanding the underlying conditions of the Civil War and the resulting Southern war aims.
