The Rhodesian War of 1965–80 is the battle for control of present day Zimbabwe. The former British colony of Southern Rhodesia rejected British moves towards majority rule and on 11 November 1965 the Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith announced his country's Unilateral Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. That act sparked a series of violent encounters between the traditional colonial army and the African guerilla insurgents of the Patriotic Front. This book examines the successes and failures of the counter-insurgency campaign of Smith's security forces and the eventual bloody birth of a modern African nation.

Excellent investigation on the impact of American Imperialism in Puerto Rico and the CaribbeanBy Jose R. BasThis is a very thorough investigation by Jorge RodrÃguez Beruff. It is very well written in simple English; although sells it as the Spanish Edition.Backed by a huge amount of documents; RodrÃguez Beruff shows how American policy on Puerto Rico; the Greater Antilles and towards many Caribbean and Latin American countries was designed and controlled by the American military; specially US Navy. The author keeps track of the career development of each of the most important decision makers in the US political and military. Tells how an ex Navy General who was in charge of recommending defense strategic moves became one of the many US President-appointed Governors of Puerto Rico. He also shows how other positions in the US Government; including the presidency; were highly influenced by the military. He explains why was Puerto Rico considered so important for USA holding the Caribbean as if it were another "American lake". By unilaterally determining the political future of Puerto Rico; USA decided to weaken and make desappear any independence movements in the Island.I was shocked when I read that most of the strategic plans designed by US Navy officials called for controlling by all means other places besides Puerto Rico; already an American colony; like Nicaragua; Dominican Republic; Panamá; and many other Caribbean islands without taking into account the people who lived in those countries. The defense of US interests justified everything; according to the American military who; in fact; also controlled the US government.Anyone seeking a deeper and detailed explanation for the present relations between Puerto Rico and USA should find this book most helpful. Anyone who wants to understand how did Latin America become "USA's backyard" will find many facts here. This is an excellent description of the building up of an empire who at the same time calls itself "democratic".0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
