A RARE LOOK AT THE WAR IN THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS.By Steven HancockA subject long-ignored by historians; author Vernon H. Crow presents the story of Thomas' Legion; one of the most interesting military units to come out of the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Told within the context of the larger war in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina; Crow does an overall fine job of presenting this amazing story to readers. One big mistake; however; derails it a bit: in his account of Jubal Early's Maryland Campaign of 1864 (in which part of the Legion took part); Crow totally ignores the assault on Fort Stevens; the only battle that took place within the District of Columbia; and where Lincoln became the only President in our history to come under enemy fire. He goes so far to say that an assault on the defenses of Washington never took place; except for a "skirmish." But other than this snafu; the book is still well-written; and belongs in the collection of anybody with even a small fascination in the American Civil War.Grade: B+
