Named a “Best Book of the Year†by New York Post “Farida Khalaf’s story is harrowing but crucial—especially when it comes to understanding what ISIS actually is and does.†—Glamour “As gripping as it is appalling…a compelling testament to the suffering of ordinary people caught up in violence far beyond their control—and to the particularly terrible price it exacts from women.†—The GuardianA young Yazidi woman was living a normal; sheltered life in northern Iraq during the summer of 2014 when her entire world was upended: her village was attacked by ISIS. All of the men in her town were killed and the women were taken into slavery. This is Farida Khalaf’s story. In unprecedented detail; Farida describes her world as it was—at nineteen; she was living at home with her brothers and parents; finishing her schooling and looking forward to becoming a math teacher—and the hell it became. Held in a slave market in Syria and sold into the homes of several ISIS soldiers; she stubbornly attempts resistance at every turn. Farida is ultimately brought to an ISIS training camp in the middle of the desert; where she plots an against-all-odds escape for herself and five other girls. A riveting firsthand account of life in captivity and a courageous flight to freedom; this astonishing memoir is also Farida’s way of bearing witness; and of ensuring that ISIS does not succeed in crushing her spirit. Her bravery; resilience; and hope in the face of unimaginable violence will fascinate and inspire.

I agree that the topic he addresses is one that definitely needs to be addressed; especially among Christians. Clearly; Christians are his intended audience. He is not trying to talk to other religious traditions; and that is fair. Representatives of other religious traditions can certainly produce a similar volume from their own theological frame; and I think that would be useful in this entire conversation. Still; Jones' book should be evaluated on what he is trying to do; not on what someone else thinks he "ought" to do. I think his Old Testament section was stronger and more solidly based than his New Testament section. That's a bit of a shame; because most Christians would tend to focus more on the New Testament. While I do think this book is helpful as far as it goes; I would like to see someone else with a bit stronger New Testament skills take up the challenge and pick up with Jones left off. Even so; this book is worth a read for any Christians who are confused and disturbed by all the polemic on both sides of the gun control debate.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Terrible scholarship!!!!By CustomerTerrible scholarship! This guy is a joke! And I am not even three pages into it. Let me clarify that1. I am not disagreeing with his thesis that men of God may defends themselves; on that I agree.2. There are many who believe in what he calls "semi-pacifists" or only governments can do it; and that I also reject.3. What I am objecting to is his GROSS NEGLIGENCE and misquoting of St Thomas Aquinas and St Augustine into that category. Clearly this author NEVER read the very passage he quoted from.Even if I weren't a respected theologian in my field I could easily tell he misrepresented their positions when I went to check the context listed in his footnotes. A text out of context is a pre text and not a proof text! This is a mistake I would expect from a second grader. St Thomas and St Augustine are in no way semi-pacifists.I would know since I had to write a term paper on the moral liceity of investigative torture and its limits and uses (most strongly supported in Augustine's thought!!!!!)0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Be a good steward of the life God has placed within your controlBy RichBaldThis book is everything I had wanted it to be. A thorough and scriptural examination of the clear biblical teaching that humanity was created with a desire for self-preservation and the scriptures make it very clear that God does not oppose personal self-defense; in fact He teaches it. Following are some quotes from the book as examples of the conclusions the author presents for your consideration. "You are responsible to God for your life." (p. 20); and "... there is a sense in which God has entrusted to us relative ownership and control of our lives. That is; within the framework of God's general will revealed in His written word; we have the right; and even the obligation; to control; protect; defend and conduct our own lives. This principle is known as stewardship." (p. 21). I hope to use this book someday to teach a Bible class on this subject.
