Crash Course On A Warrior Society - SPARTABy Edna MaramaAs an ardent student of history; this concise book on the rise and fall of the Spartan Civilization is quite refreshing to read. The author has succinctly packed into this small book tonnes of scientifically supported historical information about the Spartan society but he cautions the readers where there are controversies on any point amongst the scientific communities. Sparta’s strength was actually its greatest weakness. Their focus on producing the finest military war machines in terms of its soldiers who they start training at the age of 7; until they retire at the ripe age of 60 – created an economically unbalanced society – in that they had to rely on slaves to produce everything else that is required to support their society including their man at war. A demised military capacity in terms of available fighting man is unable to withstand a rebellious slave population – who themselves are descendants of warrior societies. But fair to say; that the Spartans goal was to produce the best fighting men; and they did archive that goal. History has immortalised their legacy. Their women; like their mean were equally exceptional compared to women from other Greek city states. They trained; lived; loved and fought under the same principles as their men – in every aspect following the dictates of their military regimented society and in equal footing with men. This book will give you a crash course in about the Spartan civilization. The Spartan military formation weapons was improved upon by Phillip the Macedonian; and it went on to be a crucial component of the successful military captains of Alexander the Great. Great read; Kudos to the author…0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. an engaging read indeed...By Cosima Anais WhizdomIndeed; this has been an engaging read that has given me so much info and facts about Sparta and the Spartan way of life. It has always interest me to read on people who made a big difference on our history. And this book was able to show me a lot of things about these ultimate Greek warriors. Like their military training and weapons; their Kings; Helots; as well as the social classes; and more than really captured my interest. Even about their clothing; culture; and daily life gave me the reasons to read and finish the book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting bookBy Jason RossThis book does an excellent job teaching you the history about Sparta. It also goes in depth about Spartan military training and the weapons they would have used against their enemies. I was never inspired by perusing history yet once I read this book; I thought that it was fascinating and I ended up perusing the entire book. It obviously clarifies how Sparta ascended and its fall; and how it connected with into various wars. A stunning book.
