There was poetry inscribed on a wall; and I did a search and found that it is an except; by Carey McWilliams; in his book that I'm right now; reviewing. Anybody who loves the amalgam culture of L.A; the experience of living here; will come away with an even better knowledge of its rich past. For example; I did not know that Riverside was the original Orange County; that Long Beach had received a great many people from Iowa. It's all here for lovers of L.A. This book will have you loving L.A. even more.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Best book on the history of LA. Period.By Breaking BradNot only a great historical account of the short but dynamic history of Los Angeles and the Southland; but also remarkable for delving into the sociological elements about the people who live there. After residing in the city for nearly twenty years; it took this book to help me understand WHY and HOW things came to be the unique way they are here. It's more than historical; it's insightful. And probably the single best account of the story of this region.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wow; Carey McWilliams is the bestBy KateLovesReadingWhat a fantastic history. I read also Phillip Fradkin's book The Seven States of California around the same time; so for a period I was immersed; and for some reason very interested; in California history reading. Carey McWilliams is so sophisticated and so deeply knowledgeable about the L.A./southern California history and culture. I think I always saw this place through rose-colored glasses; kind of idolizing it; southern California and the whole state; being from the east coast (although now I just see it as an overcrowded nightmare and wonder where they will ever continue to get ahold of water); and reading the truth about a place and how it was formed is so edifying; and interesting. (John Steinbeck has also helped me to understand California (and its often ugly; brutal history) too). Anyway; this is really; really entertaining writing and history (the kind I can't put down at night); I can't wait to read next California: The Great Exception (got the reference first from Cadillac Desert; Marc Reisner's great book); and Fool's Paradise. Could read Carey McWilliams forever.
