Students of Western civilization need more than facts. They need to understand the cross-cultural; global exchanges that shaped Western history; to be able to draw connections between the social; cultural; political; economic; and intellectual happenings in a given era; and to see the West not as a fixed region; but a living; evolving construct. These needs have long been central to The Making of the West. The book’s chronological narrative emphasizes the wide variety of peoples and cultures that created Western civilization and places them together in a common context; enabling students to witness the unfolding of Western history; understand change over time; and recognize fundamental relationships. Open Source MaterialBy College StealthMy assumption is that most individuals are having to purchase this book for a class; I actually got it to supplement a class that I was giving. I found that an instructor can easily by-pass having students pay for this book by taking the time and linking to the primary source documents online. There is minimal context giving for many of the writings and they are often excerpts that leave a lot to be desired in terms of the context and/or framing of the ideas. I understand that it is often used a supplement to World Societies; but do your students a favor; utilize open source information and prevent them from having to pay the fees for this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
