Description

On May 31; 1935; a storm system surged along the Republican River; bursting its banks in a matter of minutes with a roar that could be heard miles away. The greatest flood to hit the tri-state area of Colorado; Kansas and Nebraska; it left behind a landscape rearranged beyond recognition and claimed more than one hundred casualties. However; amid all the destruction and sorrow; amazing acts of heroism and unwavering courage were reported throughout the valley. GardinoThe authors have done a great job; long overdue; of chronicling the exploits and lives of the 10 Archbishops of New York. Starting from the beginning with Fr. Isaac Jogues; Bishops Concanen; Connolly; and Dubois they tell about trials and tribulations of being the head of the largest Catholic congregation in the United States in a very entertaining and readable way. They share many insights never before revealed based on their extensive research in the Archdiocese archives. Of particular note is the heretofore unknown outstanding contributions that Cardinal Edward Egan made during his tenure and even afterwards when he had retired. A fundraiser par excellence he did everything behind the scenes (including starting the restoration efforts of St. Patrick's Cathedral) and shunned the spot light. The edifice that is the archdiocese today is in the great shape that it is in due to his efforts. He inherited an organizational and fiscal mess and methodically went about fixing it to insure his successor inherited a fine tuned machine. Thanks to the authors for bringing the achievements of this great leader out into the open. You will enjoy this page turner and get a greater appreciation for the 10 men who built and led the New York Archdiocese today.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
