In a groundbreaking; comprehensive history of the Army of Northern Virginia's retreat from Gettysburg in July 1863; Kent Masterson Brown draws on previously untapped sources to chronicle the massive effort of General Robert E. Lee and his command as they sought to move people; equipment; and scavenged supplies through hostile territory and plan the army's next moves. Brown reveals that even though the battle of Gettysburg was a defeat for the Army of Northern Virginia; Lee's successful retreat maintained the balance of power in the eastern theater and left his army with enough forage; stores; and fresh meat to ensure its continued existence as an effective force.

The endless books on the Army of Northern Virginia; Picketts Charge; etc. aided and abetted by an East Coast army of historians; have neglected the War in the West; which captured 90% of the Confederacy. The long-suffering and usually defeated Confederate Army of Tennessee has received the attention of few historians; but Larry Daniel is remedying this neglect with this and other excellent books.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent source on the Army of Tennessee Soldiers...By Chris Todd DavidsonFinally; A book that goes into detail on the soldiers of the Army of Tennessee. This books quotes from diaries and letters from the Soldiers themselves. This is a true treasure!! I would also suggest The Army of the Heartland and Autumn of Glory by Thomas Connelly in addtion to this book. Both of these detail the Army of Tennessee from its founding until its surrender in Bentonville NC in 1865. I highly reccomend this book!!
