Slavery; the Civil Law; and the Supreme Court of Louisiana

PDF Slavery; the Civil Law; and the Supreme Court of Louisiana by Judith Kelleher Schafer in History

Description

William Howard Russell wrote My Diary North and South while traveling through the Union and the Confederacy from March 1861 to April 1862 as a war correspondent for the Times of London. Along the way he met and interviewed an impressive number of Union and Confederate leaders -- including Abraham Lincoln; Jefferson Davis; William H. Seward; and General George B. McClellan -- but he also canvassed average citizens on both sides; recounting their manners; appearance; values; and habits in remarkable detail. This memoir of his journey provides a vivid snapshot of American life and culture at the dawn of the Civil War.

Another look at an underreported side of the issue.By oldgalI think this book is for the person who wants to know more about the laws undergirding slavery; whether for research purposes or to understand another layer of the issue. I found it to be informative as well as interesting; and because it quotes so many laws and court cases; to also be credible. Information spans America from it's inception as English; French and Spanish Colonies; throughout United States of America history. I do recommend it.
