Perhaps no other Supreme Court decision has had the political impact of Dred Scott v. Sandford. Using a variety of documents that reflect regional opinions and political debates; Paul Finkelman examines the 1857 decision that helped set in motion the events that eventually led to a new birth of freedom and the abolition of slavery in the United States.

Good book for Christians.By Louise C GeilIf a Christian really wants to learn all about the many feasts and special times of remembrance; atonement; etc. Orthodox Jew practice; this is a very good book. But if you really only want to know about the influence of the old Jewish traditions and practices when Jesus walked this earth as better insight the parables and actions of Jesus and the disciples; this helps a lot. However it is also close to being boring to plow through all the details of and strange words familiar to many Jews but not so for Christians if you do not intend to try to retain all those details.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. AwesomeBy Teekay ElleI learned so much reading this book and it's follow up Walking in the dust of Rabbi Jesus which I unknowingly read first. I highly recommend reading both! I'm currently on a journey learning the true Hebrew meaning behind the Scriptures and these two books will give you greater and more in depth understanding of Jewish life and customs. Now I wanna go back and read Jesus words with the more Hebrew understanding I have learned.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Casts a new light on Bible textBy Ginger FenwickI really enjoyed this book. I easily forget the original audience of the gospels and this book reminded me again and again of the context in which Christ spoke; of the audience and their frame of reference. The author includes lots of great information cross-referencing the old and new testament. I learned a lot.
