Excellent study of Ship decorationBy AdmiralWell-researched and well-written source on ship decoration that updates and mostly supercedes the earlier classics of the subject; written in the 1920s. Highly recommended. It is an outstanding source for the subject and one of the few that offers comparative study of different decorative traditions; including the very rarely mentioned Scandinavian maritime powers. This book is not and never was intended to be a step-by-step carver's textbook. The other reviewer has clearly missed entirely the point of the book; had purchased it without reading the description.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. More History than PracticalityBy Jefferson MelbyCertainly well researched and well written history of both ship carving and the Navys of the Old World. For the woodcarver or would-be shipcarver; this was of little practical application. The history; whys and wherefores; were enlightening; yet difficult to apply to hands-on carving and design. For the price; I cannot recommend it; other than as a historical treatment of the topic. Many other how-to books out there that would be much more useful; and significantly cheaper.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
