While the Union tried to incorporate sharpshooters into special regiments (the USSS) and did specialty recruiting and qualification the Confederates used a less formal method of selecting and organizing shooting specialists which in theory gave them a more evenly-distributed capability. Complications on the availability of long-range rifles also made forming sharpshooter units; although in this respect the North had a definite advantage over the South. Well-written and reasoned; this book looks at the use of Sharpshooters as specialized skirmishers; able to use superior marksmenship and cover to survive in that role; rather than habitually picking off priority targets. If this book has a weakness it is taking time to discuss at length hardships and training common to all soldiers; not just sharpshooters. The illustrations and photos are excellent!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sharpshooters of the American Civil War 1861-1865By Lars1470Very nice pictures of uniforms and equipment for the Confederate and Union Armies. Nice detail and focus on accuracy of the accessories used by the soldiers. Rifles were pictured in a group with enlarged breech areas. All done in artists rendition. Few actual pictures of rifles; except with pictures of soldiers posing with rifles. Hard to see detail then.Pictures are old and grainy. And no close-ups of them. I suppose there are few rifles to use for pictures. I like the Green uniforms shown for Berdains Sharpshooters. Book presents brief overview of Sharpshooters from both sides. Nice quick summary book. Short but sweet! Thanks. Larry0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Liked the book but could of been more detailed about ...By michael scottLiked the book but could of been more detailed about the obscure rifles that weren't mentioned. Tended to dwell to much on the union side and didn't really list the top shooters on both sides . Great book though and full of information
