Secularization: In Defence of an Unfashionable Theory

PDF Secularization: In Defence of an Unfashionable Theory by Steve Bruce in History

Description

Based on a rich array of sources that capture the voices of both political leaders and ordinary Americans; Uncle Sam Wants You offers a vivid and provocative new interpretation of American political history; revealing how the tensions of mass mobilization during World War I led to a significant increase in power for the federal government. Christopher Capozzola shows how; when the war began; Americans at first mobilized society by stressing duty; obligation; and responsibility over rights and freedoms. But the heated temper of war quickly unleashed coercion on an unprecedented scale; making wartime America the scene of some of the nation's most serious political violence; including notorious episodes of outright mob violence. To solve this problem; Americans turned over increasing amounts of power to the federal government. In the end; whether they were some of the four million men drafted under the Selective Service Act or the tens of millions of home-front volunteers; Americans of the World War I era created a new American state; and new ways of being American citizens.

It appears that secularization could be a one-way street due to the forces arrayed against religion. The paradigm model is helpful in visualizing these forces and their sequence. Technology plays a much bigger role here than the so called devil. Religion must keep on adapting to changes in society in order to remain somewhat relevant. Given the number of religions; the choices;and the fact that a believer is now a customer who can select instead of having religion imposed; further weakens the cultural transmission of religion. It would take a pretty powerful God to reverse these trends.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good Book; although the rhetorics can get excessiveBy Roy FieldhouseSteve Bruce counters most of the critics to his secularization theory. Good Book; although the rhetorics can get excessive. The book cost about 16.19 when I first bought it. I saw it fluctuating between 20-30 on a day's notice so please take note of the fluctuating price range.
