Seances in Washington: Abraham Lincoln and Spiritualism During the Civil War

ePub Seances in Washington: Abraham Lincoln and Spiritualism During the Civil War by Nettie Colburn Maynard in History

Description

These seventy-six essays; organized under the headings of Christianity and War; Christianity and the Military; Christianity and the Warfare State; and Christianity and Torture; have one underlying theme: the relation of Christianity to war; the military; and the warfare state. If there is any group of people that should be opposed to war; torture; militarism; and the warfare state with its suppression of civil liberties; imperial presidency; government propaganda; and interventionist foreign policy it is Christians; and especially conservative; evangelical; and fundamentalist Christians who claim to strictly follow the dictates of Scripture and worship the Prince of Peace.

It seemed like a really small book even though I knew it was a paperback. But this is an item that I have had on my list for a few years now and was so excited to have the opportunity to buy it. I have a fair amount of baseline knowledge about spiritualism and so was reading very basic information that I suppose would be meaningful to a reader who had no understanding of mediums or spiritualism so can't really fault it for that. But the book was written on such an elementary school level I knew that ;although there were probably interesting anecdotal parts to this book; it certainly was not worth 20.00 to keep it. The print was large and the pages few. Market value for this book should be nowhere near 20;00. I sent it back.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lincoln: Greatest of allBy HoraceNettie provides another insight into the man. Whether or not one believes in spiritualism is unimportant. What is important here is another view of just how great this man was. Highly recommend this book for that reason alone.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A difficult book to review...By S. O'TooleA lot of what you can say about this account depends on how much faith you put in Nettie Maynard. Me? About 60%. It's a great yarn and I suspect some of it's true...it's just hard to say how much.
