A good read for the beginning of a Pacific War adventureBy Kindle CustomerIn few words: the book requires very little prior knowledge of the Pacific War - know what Midway and Guadalcanal are; and who fought. The information is well put together and leaves no logical gapholes. The balance between Japanese and Americans is spot on too. In this regard it's a great book to begin learning about the Pacific War. On the other hand; a reader with some more than basic knowledge will not find much new information; and most of it will be "fun facts"; rather than proper info.17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Dissecting a Forgotten Battle...By HMS WarspiteAs author Mark Stille remarks in his introduction; everyone remembers two of the four big carrier battles of 1942; as the Pacific contest between Imperial Japan and the United States hung in the balance in the dark days of World War II. The decisive battle of Midway and its precursor; Coral Sea; have been extensively studied. Two more carrier fights have been largely ignored: the Battle of the Eastern Solomons and the Battle of Santa Cruz; respectively in August and October; 1942.Despite its title; this excellent book dissects both fights; in the process establishing how much punch Japanese carrier aviation retained after Midway; and just how close the US Navy came to losing the fight for control of the sea space around Guadalcanal. The format is the standard Osprey one; with an introduction; a battle chronology; discussions of the opposing commanders; fleets; and plans; and a narrative of the campaign itself. The book has a very nice selection of photographs; illustrations; maps; and diagrams that breakout the action almost to the minute at critical points in the battles. Stille's prose is solid; easy to follow; and not lacking in strong judgments."Santa Cruz 1942" is highly recommended to the general reader looking for an introduction to the battle; and to the student of the Pacific War; looking for some details on a forgotten battle.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Santa Cruz 1942: Carrier duel in the South Pacific - Kindle versionBy William A. AverillThis book was originally in p-book format and the Kindle implementation is a little bit awkward; but given the convenience of the Kindle; I was more than happy to read it as an e-book.The story is well done if organized in an unconventional way. The author used a hierarchical construct that I had not seen in a historical novel before; but as I got into it; the format worked well for presenting the background and the timeline of a complex campaign which outcome was a tactical defeat for the U. S. Navy; but turned out to be a strategic victory.Overall; well done!
