The Civil War immediately calls to mind images of battlefields and cavalry ¿ but not all of the fighting took place on dry land. Yankees and Rebs alike fought on the high seas as well.Blue Gray At Sea is their story.Taken from the memoirs of such veterans as Union Admirals Porter and Dewey; and Confederate Officers James Morris Morgan and James I. Waddell; Blue Gray At Sea provides a glimpse into the often neglected naval campaigns of the Civil War with tales of Ironclads and blockade runners and the advent of submarining; as well as Incidences Involving no less than Jefferson Davis and his family; and Lincoln's own master of the high seas David Farragut.

This is the exact area of interest for me.This book does not cover combat; battles; strategy or weapons. if you are interested in these; many; many great books are available on the subject. This book is an excellent companion to Jim's two volume set on rations and combined really give a good picture of what these men ate and used every day. I can't wait to study it great detail. Most of the book is very clear details photographs with captions. Some of the book is narrative. What I have ready is very well written. Chapters include: You're in the army now; skin care; oral hygiene; shaving; hair care; first aid; keeping the uniform clean; maintaining the uniform; specialized clothing; MICA and LUCO kits; and The German textile Industry. The first and last chapters are mostly text. I am especially interested in this last chapter and may read it first. I love the book and will study it in great detail. I will buy volume two as soon as it is available. Highly recommended if you want to study the day to day life of the German soldier.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book delves deeply into the lesser known; perhaps ...By Richard J. PrandoniThis book delves deeply into the lesser known; perhaps lesser appreciated common items carried and used by the WW 2 German Soldier. Its lengthy well illustrated color format will be familiar to anyone familiar with the author's previous works concerning German rations. It not only tells the what but the why behind simple items such as soap powder; footwear; razors and blades; combs; toothbrushes; hair care products and much; much more all using color pictures of the actual items belonging to collectors from around the world. One might think there isn't much to say about these simple things but don't be deceived. The US and Britain felt the industries producing these things worth extensively investigating and these rare reports form the basis of much of the research that went into this book. As an extra attraction; interspersed in the text are rare; never before seen period photographs containing many of these items in use in garrison and in the field. Overall; the detail is exquisite and the text is informative yet not overburdened with extreme detail. If you're interested in the details; style and packaging designs of the era you can't go wrong with this book. Standby for Vol. 2!!!
