After conducting exclusive interviews with more than one hundred current and former Secret Service agents; bestselling author and award-winning reporter Ronald Kessler reveals their secrets for the first time.Never before has a journalist penetrated the wall of secrecy that surrounds the U.S. Secret Service; that elite corps of agents who pledge to take a bullet to protect the president and his family. Kessler portrays the dangers that agents face and how they carry out their missions--from how they are trained to how they spot and assess potential threats. With fly-on-the-wall perspective; he captures the drama and tension that characterize agents’ lives and reveals what they have seen; providing startling; previously untold stories about the presidents; from John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush and Barack Obama; as well as about their families; Cabinet officers; and White House aides.

There are truths and myths interwoven into a powerful story; with much to say about connections to family; to our shared past; and implications about the future. First read this in the 1970s; probably around the time that the miniseries aired. Pretty sure I was in the 9th grade. The enhanced features include video and audio clips; some photos; and a Reader's Digest article about the writing of the book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. My new favorite bookBy ColoradorunnerThe way Alex Hailey tells the story of his Kinte family is mesmerizing. I wish I would have read this book long ago. You may the story from TV; but reading the book has a way of transporting you in time. If you know me you know my thoughts on the long history of racism in our country and you know the wealth of America was built on the backs of African and Native Americans. This book gives more truthful and compelling insight into this fact. Make this your next book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A real insight into slaveryBy maribethmMany times when a person loves a book they will say they could not put it down. That is not how I read this book. I read only one or two short chapters a day but those chapters stayed with me all day. I found myself thinking how each event shaped the individuals and had an impact on future generations. This book is life changing. I rarely read a book more than once. This will be one of the rare books I will read again.
