Riverine: A Memoir from Anywhere but Here

ebooks Riverine: A Memoir from Anywhere but Here by Angela Palm in History

Description

A deeply divided border state; heir to the “Bleeding Kansas” era; Missouri became the third most fought-over state in the war; following Virginia and Tennessee. Rich in resources and manpower; critical politically to both the Union and the Confederacy; it was the scene of conventional battles; river warfare; and cavalry raids. It saw the first combat by organized units of Native Americans and African Americans. It was also marked by guerrilla warfare of unparalleled viciousness. This volume; the ninth in the series; includes hundreds of photographs; many of them never before published. The authors provide text and commentary; organizing the photographs into chapters covering the origins of the war; its conventional and guerrilla phases; the war on the rivers; medicine (Sweeny’s medical knowledge adds a great deal to this chapter and expands our knowledge of its practice in the west); the experiences of Missourians who served out of state; and the process of reunion in the postwar years.

It was a book club selection and our group has been together for some time - there was a good discussion. The line: "I go back to Indiana to recreate the pleasurable parts of my past." echos my experience when I return to Missouri.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I'd Recommend It!By Patrick PerkinsThis story was so touching and so well-written. The way water trickles through the plot is just beautiful. Palm has a strong voice throughout; a refreshing; unique POV; and a very interesting experience. A childhood crush on your next door neighbor is so relatable; but your crush generally doesn't go on to become a murderer as an adult. Palm guides the reader through this rare experience; step by step; thought by thought; and places them inside her shoes.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good book! Especially meaningful to meBy Arlene GrubeGood book! Especially meaningful to me; because I was raised on a farm in the area where author lived... but excellent read no matter where one is from. Family fun and stress; angst of growing up; universal. Will admit; at times I felt sorry for author's parents.
