National immigration debates have thrust both opponents of immigration and immigrant rights supporters into the news. But what happens once the rallies end and the banners come down? What is daily life like for Latinos who have been presented nationally as “terrorists; drug smugglers; alien gangs; and violent criminals Latino Heartland offers an ethnography of the Latino and non-Latino residents of a small Indiana town; showing how national debate pitted neighbor against neighbor—and the strategies some used to combat such animosity. It conveys the lived impact of divisive political rhetoric on immigration and how race; gender; class; and ethnicity inform community belonging in the twenty-first century.

It was great to read; although difficult; because I could actually see quite a bit of myself in him. A fierce pride; incredible empathy and refusal to let others bring you down. If you are from SW Virginia; the book will be better as you will recognize the places he travels. Great look at our history.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Confederate Point of ViewBy S. WamplerOK; it's kind of a difficult read; small print and in a style that slows my reading down. BUT it's a private's view in a day by day kind of a journal. My great great grandfather rode with the VA 7th Cav and would have seen some of the same action. The stereotype that the rank and file fought to keep slaves is dispelled and there is no effort to make it look glamorous. I recommend it as a way to gain insight to the Civil War.
